Essay 3: Connection

25. Select a technological innovation of this century and discuss its effects on your family, local community or nation. (Notre Dame/ 93)

Every day, I would look forward to the time when my brother and I would go over to my cousin Jane's house to play. Usually my mom and my aunt would go shopping leaving the three of us to play (and of course my dad). Then the magic would begin.
We would run up to her room and the dolls would come to life. They would run across the rooms, talk and interact with each other, and a story line would unfold. Scruffy would leave his house to go out and meet his friends. When he got tired, he would return home and go to sleep for the day.
After this we usually went outside to play. We would ride bicycles and roller blades and ride around the neighborhood. Chasing each other and pausing to catch our breaths between laughs, those moments were priceless.
Once all our batteries ran out, we would go back inside, where by now our moms had arrived and were preparing dinner. Tired from our afternoon of play, we would devour the delicious food prepared by loving hands. After dinner, we would watch a movie until it was time to leave.

We would use our imagination and energetic young minds to create a world that we could play in. We played games and enjoyed spending time with each other. However, now with internet, the way we interact and socialize with others have changed drastically. I still look forward to visiting my cousins, but now the way we socialize and have fun are very different from what they were couple years ago. Now with electronics and the internet, we socialize and interact with each other through a game or by chatting on the internet. One summer when I went to my cousin's house, all three of us were sitting on the couch, except instead of just talking to each other directly, we were chatting to each other though our own itouches. My mom found it peculiar, but that is an example of how the internet has changed my family. While we created our own world with dolls and other toys we had, all kids have do now is log on to the internet and enter a digital that has already been created for them.

While I feel my cousins and I grew up into the internet age, children now are growing up in the internet age and that makes all the difference. But honestly, today, where would we be without the internet?
