March: Week 2, Prompt 1

“Of Marriage and Single Life”
By Sir Francis Bacon

Central argument: Married life may not be as good as a single life.

Many people wonder if they will become married, and in today’s society there are many single people. In “Of Marriage and Single Life,” Sir Francis Bacon states that a married life may not be as great as a single life. He weights the advantages and disadvantages of getting married and I agree with Bacon because of experiences with my parents and my single aunt.
As a child, I have seen the relationship of my parents through the years. Although there are ups and downs, I am sure they wouldn’t give up their life as a family. However, time to time they do get into fights about certain things. They disagree on a certain issue or they didn’t listen properly to the other person which causes problems. They fight but in the end, it goes well. On the flip side, as a family, we have great moments together. Everyone can learn from different experiences together and we get closer as a family. By being in a family, every member can learn something from each other and grow as a person.
In my extended family, I have single aunts. Being single, they have the freedom to what they wish without the constraint or responsibility of having a family. They can go out with their friends during the weekends and have fun. They only have to take care and responsibility for themselves. They have liberty to do as they wish. However, they don’t have the joy of having their own family for themselves, but they always have the option of doing so. The single life doesn’t provide the same experiences as a married life may have and vice versa.
Married life and single life are equally great and alright as seen through my parents and my single aunts. As Bacon said, a married life may not be the more obvious choice because both have their advantage and disadvantages. Whatever happens in the future we should work our best to make it work.
