March: Week 1, Prompt 1

“TV Is Good for You: If you are a woman in rural India, at least”
By Joel Waldfogel
Central Argument: TV is good for women in rural India.

Since the television was invented, TV has come a long way in the lives of many people. In countries such as the United States, TV is considered as a negative impact on lives. However, it seems that in developing countries and rural areas, TV is having a positive effect. Joel Woldfogel, who wrote “TV Is Good for You: If you are a woman in rural India, at least” for Slate, argues that TV is good for women in rural India. TV may be changing the views that these women have, but how will cable affect them in the long run? TV may have positive affects today, but it may have negative impacts in years to come.
During 9th grade activity week, we went to rural villages in India. I happened to go to a village called Takarna. As we were learning about the lives of these people and the village, I came to realize that many of the homes had dish TV’s. It was interesting to see TVs in such a rural setting where there wasn’t much electricity even for lighting the house. It seemed that TV was an important factor for their lives. Although we didn’t see their domestic life first hand, I think the villagers in Takarna were little more liberal through TV and interaction with students.
TV may be providing changing views in women, but these changes may have permanent effects in rural life. As I have experienced first-hand, eyesight can deteriorate after staring at a screen for long hours. People may be likely to become lazy and not help out in work. This can impact the whole village.
